EasyJet Advertising, Close-Up
von Mark Howells-Mead

Budget airline easyJet have taken a step this year to kill two birds with one stone. By replacing their cloth head rest covers with temporary versions, they can avoid the tatty appearance caused by head rests becoming old and worn, whilst allowing prominent advertising space targeted to every passenger. The somewhat limited space between seats means that whilst the advert is fairly small, a fairly large amount of text can be displayed as the passenger will be reading it from a close distance. The current advert (as of the beginning of October on a route between Switzerland and the U.K.) is for a competition featured in the free inflight magazine: the seat-back thereby encourages passengers to read the magazine, which presents many more adverts from easyJet and third party advertisers than would otherwise be seen.
